Elara Whitmore was seventeen years old and had not spoken for three years.

That fact was presented to me the way one might mention a design flaw—unfortunate, inconvenient, but manageable. Her father, Grant Whitmore, shook my hand with practiced warmth. “We’ve tried every specialist,” he said. “What she needs now is consistency. And someone who won’t overreact.”

His wife, Marianne, smiled from the other side of the room. “Elara is very intelligent,” she added. “She knows how to manipulate situations with silence.”

Elara stood a few steps behind them on the staircase. She didn’t look broken. She looked alert. Watchful. Her eyes followed every movement in the room, including mine. When our gazes met, something flickered there—recognition, maybe. Or warning.

“Elara has a habit of hiding things,” she said lightly. “Caregivers who last here don’t read into it.”

That night, I found my suitcase had been moved. Not searched. Just shifted slightly, like someone had checked whether I was settling in too comfortably. My phone signal dropped repeatedly inside the house, despite the private tower on the roof.

The next morning, Grant spoke to me over breakfast. “Some people misunderstand trauma,” he said. “We value discretion.”

Elara sat nearby, silent. But when he said discretion, her fingers twitched.

Later that day, a housekeeper named Rosa caught me alone in the pantry. She leaned close, voice barely above a breath. “The night Elara stopped talking, I heard her scream. One scream. Then nothing. After that, staff were replaced.”

My stomach tightened.
